Constructed using high quality Kiri wood from the Aizu snow country region of Japan known for their slow growth and dense grain. Asa (hemp) noragi (work wear) with fine kasuri pattern which is katazome (stecil-resist-dye) and vegetable indigo dye. Both weft and warp are hand-plied. This kind of thick hemp textiles are found in Tohoku district. Generally in good condition but has some mending patches and stitches and wear in shoulder lines. Late 19th to early 20th century. Nirayama-kasa which was worn by samurai when they practiced artillery. It is made of washi (Japanese handmade paper) yarn and black urushi painted outside and kakishibu inside. It has hand-painted wave and bamboo design with gold but faded much. Nirayama-kasa was made in Ansei (1854~1860), very late Edo period. The size of vase: 8 5/8" High x 3 1/8" Dia top x 3 5/16" Dia bottom. This Shigaraki Flower vase is made by master ceramist Kusube Yaichi ( 1897-1984). It has very unusual and interesting Keshiki by Ash covered finish. It came with Kiriwood Tomobako. The top cover has Japanese writing, "Keijyu" (Celebrating long life, translation). "Kabin" (flower vase). Inside cover has Signature of "Yaichi Saku" (Yaichi made) with his chop seal. It also came with Tomonuno with Yaichi's "Ya" seal on it...
