This antique Japanese Marquetry box is a good example of the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that marked the Japanese Meiji Period. A stunning Japanese two-section choba tansu (merchant's chest), made from solid Keyaki (elm) wood, originating from the Mikuni region. The upper section holds a roomy, shelved interior with two bold Keyaki grain sliding door panels. The bottom section holds a long top drawer, with elongated lock plate typical to Mikuni tansu. Below are two small drawers with iron Warabite handles, with old labels in Japanese on the fronts, and a smaller set of sliding Keyaki panel doors...

Old (1920's) Japanese Lacquer Inro with Boxwood Toad Netsuke by Masanao III Miyake Kisaburo

It is 2.8 inches (7.2 cm) tall and 2.2 inches (5.5cm) wide. The netsuke is 1.2 inches (3 cm) by 0.97 inch (2.5 cm) wide. It is 42.9 gram.

It is in good condition with no repairs except chips, peeling of lacquer and surface scratches (as seen in the photos).

A very large pair of hardwood transom / temple architectural elements, elaborately carved with charming motifs of squirrels eating from grape vines. The carvings are deeply recessed with raised outside edges of a scrolling form. Realistic grape vines and leaves continue along the underside of each transom. Very heavy. (pictured with a tansu for scale. not included)

Unusual Japanese 2-panel calligraphy screen with highly stylized brushstrokes, bordered with silver leaf and silk. The left character reads "Gi" (or Righteousness); On the right reads "Dao" (the path or way). The inscriptions appear to mean "Righteousness must always be pursued".

Signature of a monk or a priest in his late 70s named Kakuan, appearing to date Spring 1851 with a description of the studio in which the painting was made...
