A high quality porcelain sometsuke underglaze blue san kaku-gata choku, three sided cup decorated with contrasting patterns of a pair of "Dutch" figures, orandajin, set against a diaper brocade ground, and a scene of Chinese boys, karako, one playing with a standard, the other holding a double gourd form tokkuri, and an auspicious kara hana (literally Tang flower) inset within an arabesque of kara-kusa (Tang grasses) painted in kakiwake style...

Wow! A powerful large Tsubo by Murakoshi Takuma covered in his signature Shunju glaze combination of iron, feldspar an Kunugi-ash enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shunju Otsubo. It is 36.5 cm (14-1/2 inches) diameter, 40 cm (16 inches) tall and in perfect condition, directly from the artist for this show.

An unusual and fun Kakiemon dish. Decoration in underglaze blue, persimmon red, teal and yellow-green enamel. The rim meticulously lined with chocolate brown enamel resist before adding the glaze. A central ‘Ju’ character similarly encircled with a band of persimmon red enamel resist on the biscuit before glazing. The porcelain surface exhibits an early feel (I think of it as a fine ‘pear skin’ texture) that later production doesn’t achieve...

Juban (under kimono) made of cotton katazome (stencil-resist dye) with hyotan (gourd) motif in th body, and cotton suji-shibori and katazome in the bottom, both textiles are hand-spun and vegetable indigo dye cotton. Naga-gappa made of kudzu (Pueraria lobata) fiber for wefts and cotton yarn for warps. Naga-gappa or dochugi is a kind of coat worn over kimono and kudzu-fu one is worn in summer. Kudzu-fu has been produced mainly in Kakegawa in Shizuoka prefecture since 13th century and sold to many places in Japan. Clasps made of silk cords in spiral are made before Tempo period (1831~1845), according to "Kinsei Fuzokushi" by Morisada Manko...

A sculptural pair of exquisite celadon lidded bottles by Yagi Akira enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seihakuji Kaien Koro. The striated rings are mobile, and can be spun to change the appearance of the Koro. A nearly identical work is held in the collection of Yakushiji temple...

A small Japanese porcelain footed dish. Chrysanthemum sprays in the cavetto, issuing from the rim. Butterflies further adorn the bowl. Probably late 19th century Koransha production. Some Nabeshima characteristics are used including the deep form of the dish, the tall foot with comb pattern, precious objects decoration around the outside, partial blue underglaze decoration in the bowl finished with polychrome enamel, and cash motif along the flattened rim...

The small, scalloped bowl with persimmon, light teal and yellow floral decoration with red and black outline. A molded decoration of dragon with jewel in the center. A nicely executed chocolate brown rim consistent with tradition. The verso plain and exhibiting impurities and open bubbles in the white glaze. Raised on a ring foot exposing a relatively refined clay...

Slightly distorted Ao-Oribe Chawan with a rounded brim, made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potter's knife in its lower part around the foot ring.

The foot ring is typical for Oribe bowls produced around 1610 at the Motoyashikiki and other kilns. The kamajirushi '<' kiln mark beside the foot ring underlines this once again. Such old and spectacular Oribe bowls are usually only viewable in museums...
