Watercolor on silk depicting an interesting historical event. It portrays a battle between the French colonial army, composed of Foreign Legionnaires, Marines, and African and Annamite auxiliary troops, and an army of Tonkinese and Chinese troops known as the "Black Flags." The battle takes place in front of a fortified city, likely Tuyen Kuang (1884-85), where French troops were besieged for months. The painting shows the arrival of reinforcements to break the siege...

Classic long sleeved silk brocade cheongsam aka qipao. This is all hand tailored and hand sewn, definitely not off the rack. Stunningly beautiful floral pattern (lotus, chrysanthemum, and pomegranate blossoms) with foliate scrolls, this pattern can be traced back to Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain. The zipper has come off the track other than that perfect condition. See enlargements for dimensions.

Rare jacket back panel from the remote Miao Jiupang group from Jiahe County, Guizhou province (see last enlargement), with purple embroidered pattern between the spaces in the tin decoration. This style of decoration is unique to this group and very difficult to make, as every tiny bit of tin has to be individually cut and crimped.There are some small repairs noted in last enlargements...

One pair with butterflies among colorful flowers, roundels and auspicious symbols in satin stitch and little gold thread couching on yellow satin silk. The second pair in counted stitch on yellow silk gauze with few details in satin stitch, showing young ladies in a landscape. Condition: few traces of usage, one slightly soiled. Dimension: total: c. 112 x 50 cm and c. 108 x 37.5 cm.

A very good Baotou carpet of dark indigo ground and lighter tones of blue with different type of Buddhist pattern, outer border with swastika pattern, meander border in light blue and with various symbols and flowers in the centre. Republic of China (Inner Mongolia), around 100 years old. Size: L. 118 x 59 cm; 46,5 x 23,5 inch. Condition: Very fine, thick pile. A couple of stains. No holes, repairs or moth attacks. A lot of five silk purses, embroidered in satin stitch or couched gold threads. Consisting of a fan case, two belt purses and two wallets, maybe for eye glasses. Four with cotton and one with silk lining. Condition: some traces of usage, the wallet with the bat little stained, slightly worn. All with fine satin stitch embroidery, two pairs having couched gold thread. Condition: few traces of usage, some slightly stained and creased. Dimension: longest c. 105 cm length, widest: c. 23.5 cm wide.

A pair figured silk hangings with ruyi-shaped satin ends, endless knots, pearls and tassels with embroidery of auspicious symbols and lotus. And a satin silk sleeve panel, one side embroidered with roundels. All with fine satin stitch embroidery. Cotton lining. Condition: few traces of usage, one tassel lost. Dimension: hangings: c. 125 cm total length, sleeve: c. 30 x 45 cm.

Gray silk embroidered in "petit-point" on a background of blue and white clouds. In the center, a flying bird looks at a sun embroidered in red. The bird is probably a pheasant, which is sewn with gold thread. The pheasant badge was worn by civil dignitaries of the 7th rank. 19th-century Chinese work. No losses or repairs; the silk background is torn in several places, visible in photos. On the reverse, the initials of the former collector: Th L 302x272mm

Budai aka “Fat Buddha” on silk framed dimensions: 49cm x 66cm- circa 19th century. Some of facial features (eyebrows and mouth etc) were painted on but the outline and subtle designs are kesi work. As it has the original very old frame with gilt edging on the glass, because of it’s fragility, it might be best to just send the textile but on the other hand it would be a shame to waste it. There is some discoloration on the field especially on the bottom.

Piece of ritual or prestige fabric (probably a chest or tablecloth). Weft, warp, and embroidery made entirely of twisted natural silk. Its high density makes it unsuitable for clothing. The exclusive use of silk, including for the woven base, indicates a quality textile. Decorated with isolated geometric motifs, embroidered in a rustic but meticulous manner. X-shaped crosses or four-pointed stars...
