This sublime chawan (tea bowl) was probably made by one of the most famous potters of the Edo period (1615-1868), Nin’ami Dohachi also known as the second Takahashi Dohachi (1783-1855).

Nin’ami Dohachi was a student of Okuda Eisen (1753-1811). His kiln was located in the Awadaguchi area of Kyoto. He also worked in Bizen.

The lid of the antique box, fitted to contain the bowl, bears an attestation but the signature of the writer remains undeciphered...

A truly remarkable chawan (tea bowl) made in the kuro-oribe (black oribe) style of pottery, and dating from the beginning of the Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century.

Oribe ware has been made in Japan since the end of the sixteenth century, under the guidance of Furuta Oribe (1544-1615), a feudal lord and one of the most illustrious students of tea master Sen-Rikyu (1522-1591).

Bowls shaped as this one are called kutsu chawan (shoe-shaped tea bowls)...

Hard to find nowadays: slightly distorted shoe shaped (kutsugata) tea bowl from the early Edo Period with a rounded brim, made of little iron bearing, coarse, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potter's knife in its lower part around the foot ring.

The whole body was decorated with wide white parallel lines in a white engobe over which a thin line in iron oxide was drawn, over which finally transparent ash glaze was applied - really stunning...
