This beautiful chawan (tea bowl) was made in the oribe style, a more than four hundred year old tradition from the central part of Japan in the ancient Mino province.

That tradition was in part influenced by tea master and warrior Furuta Oribe (1545-1615) who developed his own style of tea ceremony. The bowl is very well made and in perfect condition. It dates from the mid Edo Period and has no repairs or damages except inborn kiln cracks...

This is an upper child kimono of the Shonai district (Yamagata). It features blue dyeing and beautiful Tutugaki The Yuzen process of the freehand drawing is beautiful, this is thick cotton spun by hand. And crane and tortoises of the freehand drawing run well too. Lining is cotton dyed with rouge made specially in Yamagata. There are four stains of approximately 1cm (figure 1). There are two places extremely thin stain (figure 2). And there is one place of old rectification (figure 3)...

Large Japanese porcelain baluster vase, decorated all over with beautiful scenes of mountains and waterfalls, pavilions peek through trees and boat sail on water. The shoulders of the vase are painted with mountain peeks in green and blue and swirling purple mist. Mark on bottom states that this is Arita ware from the Egami Studio. Taisho Period c1920. Charming Japanese fan painting depicting a small bird on a branch, painted in ink and light color on paper, attributed to Kawabata Gyokusho (1842-1913), Meiji period circa 1900. Size: 17" long x 6" wide.

A splendid and unusually large tetsubin decorated with geometric patterns with peonies and butterflies set within a frame. This piece is a collaboration of two major artists. The body has a seal by the kama-shi or tea kettle maker, Okuni Jurou, and the lid is signed by Kinryudo. Okuni Jurou, along with his father Okuni Toubei were famous for their skill and artistry during the Meiji and Taisho Periods. Condition is original and excellent. Size: Diameter 9.5" Height 14"

Japanese Imari Porcelain Hibachi, 9" high, 10 1/4" diameter-outside maximum measurement, later part of 1800's, with repeated vertical indented grooves on entire body with four(4) separate cartouche filled with floral decoration, underglaze blue and overglaze dark orange or reddish color decoration, highlighted in gold. The condition is good, no damage or restoration.

A beautifully decorated lacquer box dating from the 1930s or 1940s enclosed in a signed wooden box. Inside silver flake on shiny black, outside what appears almost a matt finish, of dark soft orange-peel texture with brilliant designs in raised gold and silver maki-e wrapping around the edges. The artists signature can be discerned in the nashiji beneath...

Beautiful Japanese antique fan painting of irises, painted in ink and mineral colors on paper that was once silver leaf but has worn and oxidized a beautiful sepia color, wet on wet painting technique, Rimpa School, !9 century- Late Edo/Meiji Period. Size: 21" long x 7" wide.

Japanese antique tetsubin (kettle for heating water for tea), made of cast iron, dramatic and very three dimensional design of a dragon in swirling waves, highly raised with wonderful detail, bronze lid with lotus pod. Meiji Period c1900. Size: 9" high including handle x 7 1/2" wide including spout.

Air bubbles appear trapped in the glaze like a thin slab of ice. This is a fantastic Chozara by Inoue Yoshihisa enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It measures 30-1/2 x 9 x 1 inches (77 x 23 x 2.5 cm) and is in perfect condition. Due to size the cost of shipping will be accrued separately for this item.
Yoshihisa (b. 1947) studied ceramics under Kiyomizu Rokube VI, certainly one reason for his emphasis on sculptural concerns...

Japanese persimmon wood cha tansu (tea chest), made chestnut wood frame, kiri (paulownia) wood drawer interiors, and beautiful solid persimmon wood panels, dramatic grain, large compartment opens with sliding panels to reveal stepped level shelf inside, Taisho Period (c1920). Size: 35 1/4" high x 29 1/4" wide x 12 3/4" deep.

A large Gohon pottery Sweets bowl by Kiyomizu Rokubei V with expertly rendered Sparrows ascending into the sky painted by Imao Keinen enclosed in the original wooden box signed by both artists. It is 8-1/2 inches (21 cm) diameter, 4 inches (10 cm) tall and in excellent condition.

An Art-Deco Revival vase by Nakajima Yasumi II enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Jundo Homan Kabin dated 1959. It is 8-1/2 inches (22 cm) tall and in fine condition.
The name of Nakajima first came to notice in 1908, when the first generation Yasumi (1877-1951) was awarded at the Senkatsu Kinen Exhibition...

A silver inlayed bronze incense burner by Inami Keishu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) tall and in fine condition. Inami Keishu worked in metal for more than 60 years. He has been often exhibited and prized with the Nihon Kogei Kai (National Crafts Association) among many other National Events.

Feeling frisky that day, perhaps a wry self portrait by this most famous of Nuns, Otagaki Rengetsu with a poem brushed above in her unique script...

The surface of this rough slab is like an eroded plain with rivulets of glass running to a clouded pool in the center, signed along the edge and enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Sugimoto Sadamitsu. It is roughly 20-1/2 x 8-1/2 x 3 inches (52 x 21.5 x 8 cm) and in perfect condition.
Sadamitsu was born in Tokyo in 1935. A strong adherent to the Zen tradition, Sadamitsu established his own kiln at 33, receiving the kiln name from his mentor Daitokuji priest Tachibana Oki...

The print was purchased in an antique bookstore in Jinbocho Tokyo 1951 and is in good condition with minor staining (see photos below).

Impressing black Raku tea bowl, signed Kichizaemon, of the Raku family.

The signed box is labeled “10th generation”, which means Tan-nyu (1795-1854). It represents true Japanese Chado, made from of one of the most famous potter clans in Japan. Most pieces of Kichizaemon Tan-nyu are hold in museums.
