Small statue of Buddha depicting an important stage of his life when, still as Siddhartha, he sat meditating for a long time almost without eating and became emaciated and close to death, before realizing that the way to seek the Truth was not to torture oneself. Siddhartha, with an aureola at the back of his head, sits on a semi-circular throne with a vajra in relief on its front. Gilt copper, with a fine patina. Tibet or China, 19th century, maybe earlier. Height: 8.5 cm...

For some time now, in art-historical expert circles, a painting causes concern. Discovered a good ten years ago in Schwarzach im Pongau ( Province of Salzburg ) it shows a boy at the age of about six years. In spite of partly contrary opinion, everything indicates at the moment that the portrayed child represents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This would, as far as is known, be the earliest image of the composer. The Mozart town Salzburg however, is not only happy about it...

Originally, this graceful sculpture may have stood at the doorway of a palace or temple as a warning to all malicious spirits not to enter. The tradition of lions guarding doors and gates is ancient and common to a great variety of cultures, including the Egyptians, Assyrians, Romans, and Chinese. There is a strong Chinese influence in this piece, suggesting open relations between the two cultures.
18th Century - Rajputana, India
Dimensions: 16 1/2" x 5 7/8" x 11 5/8"
Beautifully painted in vivid colors. In the 1990s when Mongolia was first opening to the west, it was possible to find statues like this. Now, if I find them at all, they are extremely worn or have damage or repairs, or not of the first quality. It is the best of it's type that I have in a very long time.
Measurements: 6.25 inches tall
Provenance: Collected over 20 years ago by an Australian collector who focused his collection on Mongolian sculptures

This is a large and very rare Nepalese Copper Manadala made up of hundreds of semi-precious stones. A small handfull missing and a few very minor dents expectable in an authentic example, but in remarkable condition for an antique piece of this type. Not a tourist piece, but made for practice. From an old German collection. Mesmorizing, beautiful, large, and very complex, it is a remarkable survivor for such a fragile medium. Hard to convery in photos the visusal impact this has in person...
19thC 3 dimensional Nepalese Mandala Box made of all silver-very finely worked, covered with very high quality semi-precious stones. The stones are of exceptional quality- much higher than typically found on the square copper Nepalese plaques (usually 20th century) that are covered with semi-precious stones. These have deep reds, greens and blues, and some of the small ones look to possibly be rubies or other precious gems...
Large antique brass jar with animal and figural scene. Inscription on interior top lip. Overall wear as shown.
Note the fine detail work in the dothi. The face on this piece is absolutely mesmerizing, and as good as on any you will see of the period. Relatively small, but exudes a temendous presence far beyond his size. An all time personal favorite, and one of the best fierce deity sculptures of any size I have owned in 30+ years of collecting...
18th/19thC Mongolian Tsong Ka Pa. Massive at 20.5 inches tall and 23 inches tall on its custom base. Superb face. Thick copper repousse, well constructed, very solid, and in exceptional condition. Best of this type you will encounter in this size anywhere outside a museum or book. The previous owner, who lives in New York City, inherited it from a relative who purchased through an auction in Russia many years ago when a small Eastern Russian regional museum was closed down. Item 6666 on my websi...
A very rare, special solid-cast Nepalese Buddha from the 9thC. Its extreme heaviness looks to be solid copper or copper alloy. Traces of gilding remain. Measures 4 1/8" tall and 5.5" tall on its custom base. There is a closely related example in the Reitburg Museum in Switzerland. There was one other I saw at an Australian auction several years ago, with a face not nearly as fine as the face on the one shown. However, I cannot find the catalogue to be able to give the exact reference. There have...
