Old song bird catcher from the Minang people of Central Sumatra. I bought this in Padang in 1988 and it was already old at the time, so I can date this to about 1950. A classic honey trap, right out of the KGB spy book. A hot and seductive female bird is placed in the back of the cage and when a dumb male bird comes along and lands on the perch in front this will trip a peg that will cause the net in the front to come down and now he is caught. A rare large antique Japanese Karuma Tansu (wheeled chest) made of solid quartered sawn Keyaki (zelkova) wood with hand forged iron hardware and wooden wheels. Sliders are made of burl keyaki hardwood. The upper portion of the chest has a large compartment opened by sliding panels with horizontal slats and a heavy hand forged iron latch. The bottom portion has two large drawers. Gorgeous original finish with beautiful patina.

Very finely detailed Chinese porcelain shallow bowl or dish dating around 1850. In excellent condition, it has only one tiny old chip or fret on the lip. Measures just under 5.5 inches in diameter and just over 1.25" high.

It features prominently in Japanese culture, where it is widely seen as a fearsome and reckless animal,Among Japanese hunters, the boar's courage and defiance is a source of admiration, and hunters and mountain people not uncommonly name their sons after the animal. The underside of the pig has a maker's mark.
