$550 A mother of pearl inlaid hardwood table screen. Flowers, birds and butterflies garden motif. Southern Chinese or Vietnamese, late 19th century. Good, serviceable condition with only minor mother of pearl loss. Wood tenons on either side of the panel hold it fast within grooves routed the length of the two posts on the base. One tenon missing on one side (an easy project) but not compromising stability. Height assembled, 26 1/2 inches.

The mudra where the Buddha touches the ground is called the bhumisparsha mudra, which translates to "earth touching mudra". In this mudra, the Buddha's right hand is extended downward to touch the earth, while his left hand rests in his lap. The
Condition is very good and consistent with age... Statue of Buddha, his face reflecting a profound inner serenity, wearing monk's robes, sitting on an elevated throne, his hands in "bhumisparsa mudra". Slightly eroded alabaster. Height: 24.4 cm. Very good condition.
Note: The statue was hollowed out inside, a feature which is quite rare, such statues being carved outside only.
