Four Thai 14th - 15th Century Stoneware Boxes & Jars

A selection of Thai stoneware vessels made around the 14th - 15th centuries from a private Sussex collection, the taller jar/bottle originally sold by ourselves in 2009. The heights range from 5cm to 13.5cm. The tallest has no repairs but a hairline to the lower body. The loop-handle jarlet has no repairs but has a chip to the lower mouth. The larger box is chipped and has a repaired crack...

Statue of Buddha, his face reflecting a profound inner serenity, wearing monk's robes, sitting on an elevated throne, his hands in "bhumisparsa mudra". Slightly eroded alabaster. Height: 24.4 cm. Very good condition. Note: The statue was hollowed out inside, a feature which is quite rare, such statues being carved outside only.

Very rare antique lacquer box from the Southern Shan States circa late 19th CE to early 20th CE. This a complete set (which is rare in itself these days). The pattern though simple is exquisitely detailed. I have not seen this pattern documented anywhere and I have a few of this type all acquired in China in Yunnan, so I am wondering if it is possible it was made by the ethnic Shan (Daizu) living there...

Rare men’s loin cloth from the Northern Chin, Haka group Burma. Mantle of Merit: Barbara Fraser has a good write up on these, and has a couple of pieces dating to late 19th to early 20th century, she also writes these were rarely used after 1950 circa first half 20th century. Three rare quartzite beads, carved in the shape of elephants. These were acquired in Burma about 40 years ago by Bucklee Bell contributor to the Peter Francis Bead Project dating circa 900CE or earlier. Please note scale is metric in last enlargement. Free shipping.

Unusual, late Ayutthaya or Early Rattanakosin Period Thailand Buddha head. The bronze has been cast with quite light bronze and the ears are made from copper strips and lacquered over. The face is quite atypical with Chinese characterisics, possibly a regional style. Please examine enlargements for condition. H: 22cm/8.7in (with stand 31cm).

Beautiful women’s apron style skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group, Central Highlands of Vietnam. Woven from fine handspun cotton using all indigo and natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This piece is has small tear at the corner (see last enlargement) and a couple of frays but otherwise excellent condition and dates to 1960 to 1970...

A scarce Sawankhalok pottery kendi, 15th century, decorated in iron black with a lotus design. 14cm tall. Condition; good, excavated condition. No restorations. Provenance; ex Duke Melplash collection.

This piece was unearthed in Cambodia by the famous researcher Noriki Shimazu and exported to Japan, and there has been used as a tea container in Tea ceremony. Rare and unusual 3 paneled piled blanket from the Rawang ethnic group, Kachin State, Burma. The ground is woven from hemp, the reddish head ends are dog hair .There are a few areas that have a bright colored commercial yarn but other than that, all natural dyes. In the red field there are some bits of missing weft noted in enlargements. This piece is circa 1950 (+/-), definitely old an old piece...

I acquired in Vientiane, Laos in 2010, and this is highest quality of this type of weave available. Included is simple hand carved “elephant” textile hanger. An exceptional home décor accent piece.
