A red silk textile finely handwoven, using the supplementary weft technique, with gold-wrapped and colored silk threads. From the Malay-related people of Palembang, in Sumatra Indonesia. The central panel (badan) is filled with flower motifs in a lattice. Followed by a band of bird-like creatures and the triangular bamboo shoot motif. Condtion: traces of wear and age, minimally faded, few thin areas, creases. Dimension: c. 81 x 211 cm.

A fine large and rare ceremonial textile from Sumatra, maybe by the Pasemah people, woven in two parts. The silk fabric with stripes having ikat-dyed pattern and sumptuously woven with gold- and silver wrapped thread in songket-technique. Condition: few traces of age and usage, slightly faded, few small thin areas and tiny holes, some wear. Dimension: c. 240 cm x 100 cm.

Large single panel ikat from Jepara, Java, Indonesia. L: 2.9meters x 1.2 meters. The bright yellow and blue thread are chemical dyed commercial cotton, but the rest is handspun threads and vegetable dyes. This was made in the late 1980s and perhaps it would have been made into several sarongs or a commercial arts and crafts export. Very dramatic pattern. Supple cloth.

Rare men’s loin cloth from the Northern Chin, Haka group Burma. Mantle of Merit: Barbara Fraser has a good write up on these, and has a couple of pieces dating to late 19th to early 20th century, she also writes these were rarely used after 1950 circa first half 20th century. Beautiful women’s apron style skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group, Central Highlands of Vietnam. Woven from fine handspun cotton using all indigo and natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. The Tedum aka Tiddim are a subgroup of the Chin, who live mostly in Northern Burma, Chin State, as well India, and Bangladesh.
