Antique blanket or sarong from the Stieng/Xtiêng ethnic group Vietnam. Over 80 years. Woven from all handspun cotton threads and is unusually large for a single panel. There is one ink stain and a small hole please examine enlargements. W: 100cm/39.8in and L: 185cm/72in.

A red silk textile finely handwoven, using the supplementary weft technique, with gold-wrapped and colored silk threads. From the Malay-related people of Palembang, in Sumatra Indonesia. The central panel (badan) is filled with flower motifs in a lattice. Followed by a band of bird-like creatures and the triangular bamboo shoot motif. Condtion: traces of wear and age, minimally faded, few thin areas, creases. Dimension: c. 81 x 211 cm.

Antique Lao hand woven silk panel (possibly the end of woman’s shaman head scarf). The top depicts mythical elephants, the center shows an ancestral spirit under a roof with nagas erupting from above, below are more spirits and mythical beasts. This has a simple palette only natural dyed black, maroon and gold(ish) hand spun raw silk threads...

A fine large and rare ceremonial textile from Sumatra, maybe by the Pasemah people, woven in two parts. The silk fabric with stripes having ikat-dyed pattern and sumptuously woven with gold- and silver wrapped thread in songket-technique. Condition: few traces of age and usage, slightly faded, few small thin areas and tiny holes, some wear. Dimension: c. 240 cm x 100 cm.

The striped cotton fabric sumptuously decorated with couched gold- and silver wrapped thread work and sequins, showing a row with birds. Large single panel ikat from Jepara, Java, Indonesia. L: 2.9meters x 1.2 meters. The bright yellow and blue thread are chemical dyed commercial cotton, but the rest is handspun threads and vegetable dyes. This was made in the late 1980s and perhaps it would have been made into several sarongs or a commercial arts and crafts export. Very dramatic pattern. Supple cloth.

Rare men’s loin cloth from the Northern Chin, Haka group Burma. Mantle of Merit: Barbara Fraser has a good write up on these, and has a couple of pieces dating to late 19th to early 20th century, she also writes these were rarely used after 1950 circa first half 20th century. The two end panels are different colors of which the lighter blue colored is original while the darker piece.. Made from hand spun cotton with silk patterns...

Beautiful women’s apron style skirt from the Bahnar (Ba Na) ethnic group, Central Highlands of Vietnam. Woven from fine handspun cotton using all indigo and natural dyes. The weaving is very intricate and refined, note the use of narrow warp ikat bands throughout this piece. This piece is has small tear at the corner (see last enlargement) and a couple of frays but otherwise excellent condition and dates to 1960 to 1970...

Lao, continuous supplementary weft “kit” woven festival banner. This is created from all handspun silk and natural dyes. I acquired in Vientiane, Laos in 2010, and this is highest quality of this type of weave available. Included is simple hand carved “elephant” textile hanger. An exceptional home décor accent piece. Colorful Stieng woman’s wrap around skirt from the Xtiêng (Stieng), estimated population of 7000, minority Binh Duong Province and Dong Nai Province of southeastern Vietnam. Hand woven with handspun cotton field and patterns of combination synthetic and cotton commercial yarns, this piece dates to circa 1970 to 1980 (i.e. post Vietnam War era). Exceptional semi antique, over 70 years old, two paneled Tai Daeng (Red Tai) blanket from Northern Laos with supplementary weft silk Chinese Shou longevity character medallions and key fret design.
