A fine woman's ceremonial skirt from Lampung Sumatra, woven in two parts. The striped cotton fabric sumptuously decorated with couched gold- and silver wrapped thread work and sequins, showing a row with birds. Large single panel ikat from Jepara, Java, Indonesia. L: 2.9meters x 1.2 meters. The bright yellow and blue thread are chemical dyed commercial cotton, but the rest is handspun threads and vegetable dyes. This was made in the late 1980s and perhaps it would have been made into several sarongs or a commercial arts and crafts export. Very dramatic pattern. Supple cloth.
