A fabulous image of a scholar at rest along the banks of the stream under a cascade of delicate calligraphy by Irie Shikai. A fine Edo period (1603–1868) tansu chest, finished in rich black lacquer and reinforced with original hand-forged iron mounts. Compact and sturdy, this chest features a bold, rectilinear form softened by the lustrous lacquer surface, which still reveals traces of red lacquer beneath where age original worn finish.
The façade presents a central large drawer flanked by smaller drawers below, each fitted with rounded iron warabite-style pulls and lock plates with hammered detail...

Japanese antique multi-drawer tansu from the Meiji era, constructed with richly figured burl wood drawer fronts that display swirling grain patterns unique to each panel. The chest features an impressive array of small drawers, originally designed for organizing and safeguarding precious goods...

The mask is carved from a single piece of very light wood, covered with gofun (powdered oyster shell and animal glue) and painted with pigments to create a natural-looking facial expression. The face depicted portrays a cheerful and benevolent character. The eyes are made of glass for a realistic effect. This type of mask was hung on the walls of Japanese homes either to ward off bad luck, to drive away evil spirits, or to attract joy and happiness, as is the case here...
