Beautiful teahouse plaque dated late Edo Period, Ca. 1861. The inscription on the back by a monk Maezono Hokyo reads that the donor, Mr. Sugaeda asked the then Minister of the Right, Kasanoin Ieatsu (1789-1866) to write the kanji for the plaque of the teahouse he was donating to Kitano Shrine in Kyoto.This was 2 years before Kasanoin Ieatsu resigned. Estimated to be 500-600 years old, this extraordinary work of Bizen pottery would have been fashioned in an “ana-gama” or a rudimentary dugout kiln often placed at the side of a hill. While modern Bizen pottery tends towards smooth surfaces, regular shapes, and evenly distributed or gradated glazes; by contrast, this piece is rather wild in appearance, with a variety of colors ranging from copper green, reddish ochre, and sandy brown...

A very nicely hammered silver teapot made in the shape of a squat pumpkin. “Jungin or Pure Silver” mark on the bottom. It can be dated to Taisho or Showa period. H. 19 cm. Weight: 660 grams. Very good condition.

We have a particular interest in beautiful old Raku tea bowls and spend quite a bit of time searching for exceptional examples to include in our gallery. Here we see a beautiful work that appears to be at least 150 years old and possibly much older. On the side can be seen an especially nice “hasami no ato” (tongs mark) and along the top rim on both the inside and the outside are impressed lines, formed during the firing process...
