Shugo Takauchi was born in 1937 and is based in Mashiko of the Tochigi Prefecture in Japan. He worked as a company employee before visiting Mashiko and discovering Shōji Hamada's work. He then decided to leave his life as a salaryman and established his own kiln in 1968. Since the late 1960's, he has had a very successful career as a potter with an extensive number of followers. He primarily fires Mino, Shino and Oribe ash-glazed and black wares...

Bronze vases, inlaid with precious metals. The artist used all known Japanese alloys, shakudo, shibuichi, sentoku plus gold and silver. The decoration represents cranes in the middle of a lotus field. The whole is highly symbolic, the cranes of immortality and the lotuses of Buddhism. Good condition. Height: 215mm.

As can be seen from the attached images, especially beautiful in natural light; this charming vase features contoured ridges encircling the exterior while rivulets of deep green Oribe glaze drip down its sides. Catching the light at the right angle, rainbows of color shimmer on its surface and the unglazed base reveals the iron-rich clay this piece is fashioned from. Oribe is a visual style named after the late-16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe (1544-1615). Typically, black or green glazes are applied to the bodies of these works and light-colored windows are created using feldspar. These high-contrast areas then act as a canvas upon which abstract, minimalistic, and often naturalistic themes are painted...

A lacquered document/paper storage box known as a Bunko by Yamazaki Ritsuzan decorated with firefly squid in a very modern style enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hotaru Ika Maki-e Bunko.
