SOLD Japanese antique maki-e lacquer jūbako, tiered boxes for food. Made up of five square compartments and a lid. The lacquer design is of bamboo and tendrils of berry vines (either Japanese wineberry or raspberry) in gold and red lacquer on a black ground. The insides of the boxes are lacquered an orangish-red.
Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912) Dimensions: 14 1/4" high (all boxes stacked) x 9" wide x 9" wide A tall and slender “crane neck” Imari Tokkuri from the Edo period. Multiple chrysanthemums (Kiku) finely painted in bold underglaze blue. The composition is such that several blooms can be seen from nearly any angle. A fine example of peak period Imari. Similar examples in “Imari of the Peak Period” Yamashita Takuro/Tokuma Shoten No.’s 278/279.
