Sold. Thank you. Asa (hemp) noragi (work wear) with fine kasuri pattern which is katazome (stecil-resist-dye) and vegetable indigo dye. Both weft and warp are hand-plied. This kind of thick hemp textiles are found in Tohoku district. Generally in good condition but has some mending patches and stitches and wear in shoulder lines. Late 19th to early 20th century. $238.60 This is a Japanese antique Boro Tattered Material a rare and hand-spun natural Shina-fu Linden fabric with dark brown. It is an rare old meiji period (1868-1911)fabric. It is a thick and rough. Shina-fu Linden is a deciduous tree native to northern temperate regions. Elm and linden cloth naturally turn darker brown as time passes, due to the tannin content in these tree fibers. There is dirt and repair marks. The rag that has been used many times and discolored is an art in itself...

The sleeve part natural Indigo dye cotton katazome.
The body and back are silk safflower dyed shibori(Tie-dyeing) .
The collar and lining are cotton. The fabric on the collar is a very nice Edo period cotton.

Buddhist monks associated with the teachings of Kukai (or Kobo Daishi) would embark on a pilgrimage to visit the 88 temples on the island of Shikoku. Upon arriving to each temple, the monk would bathe before giving offerings and reciting prayers as well as receive a stamp distinctive to each temple. Normally a monk would carry around a special stamp book however it is not unusual to stamp the monk's coat as seen here...

An antique vertical wall hanging made of velvet, partially cut and painted with ink and colors. Beautiful depiction of a watermill in a grove with two peasants. Original brocade border and printed cotton lining with hanging loops. Signed and sealed in the lower left corner. Condition: fine, scarce stained, partially faded, few traces of age. Dimension with border: c. 198 cm x 146 cm.

Some are designated as intangible national assets, however some haven't been woven anymore now, and some are reproduced. They include precious bast fibers such as fuji-fu (wisteria), shina-fu, kuzu-fu and so on. They also have natural dye textiles such as shikon-zome, akane-zome, indigo dye Arimatsu Narumi shibori, tsumugi and so on...
