Six panels of noren made of hemp with stripes which are in natural and indigo colors. The ground cloth and stripes are vegetable indigo dye and both warp and weft are hand plied. Rectangular fukusa, which is used to ceremonially cover gifts. Taupe colored, finely ribbed silk basis on which the decoration is embroidered by hand in silk and gold thread. On three corners there is a tassel made out of twisted gold-thread.

The image shows two cranes, flying above the rising sun over crashing waves. This is an auspicious New Year’s image of the first sunrise of the year.

Rare Early Nabeshima Dantsu – Japanese Cotton Carpet, 19th–Early 20th Century

This excellent example represents the unique Japanese carpet tradition and remains in very good usable condition.

Japanese antique noren (doorway curtain) made of indigo dyed cotton in three panels. The design is executed in traditional tsutsugaki paste resist technique and shows a scene of butterflies and an exuberance of blossoming peonies growing from the rocky ground. Looped tabs at the top of the noren allow for it to be hung by a rod.

Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)

An antique vertical Japanese wall hanging made of velvet, partially cut and painted with ink and colors. Beautiful depiction of two fighting cocks and chickens in a bamboo groove. Original brocade border and printed cotton lining. Signed and sealed in the lower right corner. Condition: right low corner with water stains, faded, the border is in patches brittle and raddled. Dimension with bordure: c. 185 cm x 114.5 cm.

Cotton cloth with tsutsugaki flower motifs which is hand-spun and vegetable indigo dye. Originally it might have been used as 'yutan' (cover for drawers or a chest) with crests, however this one is used for futon cover as it has cotton dusts in the back. Asa (hemp) noren (shop curtain) with "Mitsui" which is a logo of a noted general trading company and was a successful kimono textile dealer in Edo period. Both warp and weft are hand-plied and all hand-sewn. In good condition and has some wear on the selvedge from heavy use and washing. Late 19th early 20th century. W:144cm, L:132cm
