Yukata (cotton unlined kimono) with shibori (tie-dye) whose motifs are tomoe (three-way), aboshi (fishing net being dried) and a logo with the character uma (horse). The shibori techniques are: Miura shibori and Ori-nui shibori (folded and stitched). It is hand-sewn and all tie-dye is by hand. Vegetable indigo dyed. A fabulous large porcelain vase by Daimaru Hoppo (Hokuho) enclosed in the original signed and compartmentalized wooden box complete with a rosewood base. The vase is a perfect example of the Sinophile aesthetic that permeated Japanese art in the early 20th century. The simplified form rises from to frets decorated with stylized cicada under a belt of archaic figures and yotsu-domoe (yin-yang) symbols. A pair of antique Japanese folding keyaki doors with iron mounts. The door is constructed with mortise and tenon joints. The panels are divided into 7 parts framed with carved decoration and hinged with iron mounts. The carved decoration is finely painted with polychrome mineral pigment with gold gilt accents. The subject matter of the temple doors is a scrolling lotus motif and 8 phoenixes.
The phoenix represents power sent from the heavens to the Empress...

A superb example of the mastery of Bizen Saiku-mono sculptures by Nishimura Shunko dating to the pre-war era. The musculature and bone structure of the creature is clearly visible, and it wears a cloak of ash glaze like fur, the tail actually covered in dry “goma” textured ash, and the lower extremities showing a fine assortment of Hi-iro flame colors on the raw clay. Stylistically there appears to be some influence of the pottery technique of Okinawan Shisa (lions)...

This is suoh of samurai's hitatare full dress in Edo-meiji period (upper part). The material is hemp of the handspun & natural indigo dye.Textile seems to be hand spun and woven, and has soft touch. Since this was used from the Edo to the Meiji period, there are many fading and small holes as shown in the image.This is the family crest of kikusui. This is a beautiful old style Plique A Jour vase signed fr Kumeno. Rims are silver. It stands 3 1/2 inches tall and is more attractive than the images show. There is a hard to notice line shown in the last image.

This is a beautiful small cloisonne vase decorated with with 7 butterflies of different sizes. Stands 4 3/4 inches tall. It is stamped Japan on base so it was probably made sometime between 1920& 1930. The enamel colors and style look like a few Ando pieces we have had from this time period. Condition is excellent with just wear to the rim coatings
