Sold KARUTA Remains of the 18 old paper picture cards (with no cards to be read) in a game of Japanese card game called 'karuta' (ref. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karuta), early 20th century, Japan, 5.5 x 8 cm (2.16 x 3.14in) each... Samurai menpo mask with the 'fierce' ressei expression, with the iron and red lacquer surface which gives the face deep and marked wrinkles.
The generously sized nose adds a distinctive element to the face of the mask, together with the brush moustache.

A magnificent large spiraling work in dark iron by Takatsu Mio. Perfection of form defines this young female artists work, and this does not disappoint. It begins at a blunt point, tightly spiraling outward as the shape evolves from a thick round to a wide spiraling flange. A very challenging work which seems to defy understanding.
