Japanese totai cloisonne on porcelain lidded tea jar, or cha-ire, decorated with colorful butterflies, flowers, and leafy vines set against a black background. Circa 1870s. 5 3/8" high. "Totai," was a short-lived experiment of applying cloisonne onto ceramic objects rather than onto a metal substrate. Production ceased in the 1870s because the enamels tended to crack and so many pieces did not survive the production process. Very good overall condition. From a Tucson, Arizona collection.
Chinese late Qing to possibly Republic period circular form porcelain lidded seal paste box carved in high relief with a four-clawed dragon chasing a flaming pearl among clouds. The bottom of the box is carved around the circumference with waves and the base holds a square "Wang Bingrong zuo" mark. The interior is turquoise blue. They are respectively 15.8 x 8.5 x 26 cm, 25 x 10 x 24 cm and 23 x 9 x 23.5 cm (roughly 10 inches tall) each, and in excellent condition. They are published in the book Kirameku Kyo no Meiji Bijutsu (Shining Kyoto Artists of the Imperial Court) and were exhibited at the Kyoto Kyocera Museum in the summer of 2022.
