Vietnamese 15th Century Blue & White Bowl

This bowl was made during the 15th century. It is quite "heavily-potted" and has a high wide foot. It is nicely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, the colour darker where the glaze is thicker. The pattern comprises floral and lotus leaf patterns, under a crackled glaze. The unglazed inner foot is coated with a chocolate-brown wash.

This knife would only be used on the first cutting of the season and as with most all of the rice cultivators in Asia there is a great deal of ritual and importance given to this act, regardless of the religion i.e. Buddhist, animist, Hindu etc. The handle has a wonderful original patina and the blade is till quite sharp.Circa 60 to 100 years old...
