Exceptionally rare small lacquered box from the Karen people of Burma. This is an antique piece circa early 20th century (possibly earlier). I have yet to find any other examples of pieces with the carved design on the bottom (either in the field or any published literature). There is some minor loss to lacquer to at the edge of the top. A lovely wood carving of a pair from Bali. Meticulously carved and painted, the man with keris and the woman holding an offering, standing on a base. Condition: the base with some cracks and a small loss, the hilt of the keris glued, paint with few losses and wear. Dimension: c. 27 cm high.

A set of Burmese amulets in lacquered wood and gilded with gold leaf.
It is believed that this type of statuette had special powers due to the paste made from sacred ashes and medicinal herbs, which was inserted into the hole in the base of the statuette and carried by healers.
