An incredible mixture of gray and lavender colors on the sculpted natural form of this expressive Chawan by the 8th generation Kaneta Masanao.

It comes with its originally signed and sealed wooden box titled Hagi Hai-yu (ash glazed) Kurinuki Chawan.

The style is Kurinuki, not formed on a wheel but cut and worked from a block of clay, an approach the artist is world wide famous for.

Masanao likely needs no introduction...

Wall vase in cast bronze, representing a dragon coiled on itself, its meandering body delimiting the contours of the vase. The casting must have been complicated and several holes and gaps appeared which were filled with welded bronze plates as can be seen in the detail photos. Japanese Meiji period Arita Imari porcelain pedestal bowl decorated in underglaze blue and brilliant overglaze enamel with gilt highlights. The interior holds a scene with two figures standing with rakes beside water in a landscape with birds flying overhead among pine branches. A tortoise is at their feet. The interior and exterior edges are decorated with two abstract bands. On the outside edge, the lower band sports a row of hanging tassels...

Decor representing Jô and Uba with their broom and rake under a pine tree. This refers to the legend of 2 lovers who, united for life, were very happy and together became very old. They died the same day at the same time. Their spirit lives in 2 old pines, one in Sumi-Yoshi and one on the beach of Taka-Sago...

An unusually small size Nagoya Mizuya Tansu in 1 section made of Hinoki (Cypress) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. 3 sets of sliding doors with spacious storage behind each set. 4 side by side center drawers and 3 drawers at the bottom for additional storage needs. Narrow depth allows for placement in even the narrowest of hallways.

Antique Japanese small ink stone. Carved with leaves and fruit on front and back. The front is accented with three tiny pieces of coral. The entire back side is carved with intricately interlacing vines, leaves and fruit. A small mouse sits off the the right side. Comes with kiri wood tomobako.

Antique Japanese craftsman's block. Made of keyaki (elm) wood and carved with two fan-shaped handles. Thought the term dai usually refers to plane blocks, this block also functioned as an important tool or surface for a serious artisan. It is unusual in that it is carved with a rectangular opening on the underside, a customization possibly to help hold it in place while in use.

One of such rare antique Hagi Chawan with wonderful milky white glaze from the 18th century, perfectly thrown and highlighted with an old gold restoration, a fantastic gintsugi (kintsugi) which makes our Hagi tea bowl even more valuable and outstanding.

Like many of the great Japanese ceramic traditions of western Japan, Hagi originated with Korean potters...

A patterned Seki vase by Ito Shin enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hai-mon Hanaike (Ash Pattern Vase). The patterns remind me of the patterns on an Ainu Robe. Stoneware, it is 38 cm (15 inches) tall and in excellent condition. Ito Shin was born in Chiba in 1952 and has lived in worked in Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture...
