Also called hou-ou, the pair of mythical birds together are often symbols of fidelity but also represent fire, sun and justice. When used in reference to the imperial household, the phoenix represents the empress.

This is Japanese Antique Scale from late Edo 1860's. The scale is made of Bone Rod with three different tick marks on the rod. You can measure, 17 Monme (68.75 gram), 50 Monme (187 gram), and 160 Monme (600 gram). Monme is old Japanese weight scale. The scale bone rod came with brass round tray with threads. Japanese large Cast Iron Tetsubin, Tea Kettle, Iron Tea Pot with Brass Cover, Ca. 1910, 11 1/2" high include handle, 6 3/4" high and 6 1/2" wide include spout for tea pot only, even textured body with very high relief design wide edge rim, and Brass cover rest into fitted lower rim. The loose Brass knob is repaired, shaped handle is metal, rust inside the pot.

A Japanese hand forged iron tsuba. A tsuba is an important fitting on a samurai's sword to protect their hands from the blade and provide balance. This tsuba has cast motifs of a 5 petal flower and oblong hole. The tsuba is from the Myochin school (1573-1867).

A very lovely small Japanese teapot accented with decorative running splashes of gold against a dark brown almost black backdrop. The same color can be seen on the bottom 1/5 of the teapot just under the handle and continues to include the base bottom. The copper remaining exposed copper has a deep copper patina that comes only with age and usage. The handle features intricate basketry weaving. This was a treasured teapot and would make an excellent decorative specialist addition to your home...

A set of 5 chataku (saucer for tea cup) made of brass and black checker pateern looks painted with urushi. In good condition but some parts where black urushi came off and hair lines. It has engraved mark, "Shobido" in the back. 20th century. Glass tea cup is not included. 11cm x 11cm x 1.2cm

Considered auspicious symbols of wealth, status, and good fortune; foo dogs—commonly referred to as shishi or koma-inu in Japan—are often seen in pairs guarding shrines, straddling the doorways of shops, and protecting public buildings. This fierce guardian appears to be made from bronze, has very detailed and skillful etching, and a wonderful patina that would place it sometime before the turn of the last century.
