A beautiful Thai painting portraying a Jataka tale. A royal chariot of with the future Buddha before he renounced his royal position. At the bottom of the painting four devotees are holding lotus buds perhaps indicative of another time frame. Done with mineral pigments and the most exquisite coloration. This thai painting was part of a Buddhist prayer book. On the backside a message in is beautifully written. Age: 18th-19th century. Size: 11.625"H x 8.625"L

An unusual hira natsume decorated with motifs of a cicada, dragonfly, spider, snail, cricket, and frog. A few insects are closely associated with the various seasons. For example, the cicada and snail are summer insects, the dragonfly and cricket are autumn. In addition, the insects have allusions to zen and Japanese philosophies. Japanese antique bronze censor, decorated all over with archaic motifs and scrolling vines, stands on three legs with heads of horned mythical creatures, the base is covered with rolling waves, handles in the form of fu-dogs, lid is covered with clouds and topped with a fu-dog, rectangular cartouche on bottom, illegible. Taisho Period. Size: 24 1/2" high x 15 1/2" wide.

Antique Japanese plique-a-jour round box. It is decorated with grapes and leaves on a maroon background. It measures 3" diameter, 2.5" tall. Taisho Period (early 20th century).

An interesting Japanese cloisonne hexagonal vase decorated with motifs of chrysanthemums. The cloisonne is done in a technique aka-sukashi, ginbari, where the metal base contains a pattern which is showing through the red cloisonne glaze. Above the metal base is the cloisonne work of chrysanthemum flowers with a bird flying in the distance. On the rim of the foot, two marks can be seen. Beautiful Chinese tomb pottery horse in two pieces, sculpted of gray clay and painted with slip, wonderful dramatic shape, expressive face with open mouth, painted with white slip, traces of orange and black slip details especially on the head and face. Chinese Humo hardwood tiered seal case from 1950's. Has four rectangular stacked shallow trays. Carved lid with scholar painting on a rock with seated attendant. The base is fitted with a handle flanked by guy-dragons. Dimensions: 11'' High X 10 1/2'' Long X 7 1/2'' Deep

Chinese cinnabar lacquer box in the form of a lobed squash or fruit with stem for handle, deeply carved with intricate scenes of flowers and butterflies, interior is lacquered black.

Chinese Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - A.D. 220) bronze lidded censor, round form, on three legs, incised characters on both front and back sides, handles on either side, beautiful patina, sits on beautifully carved hardwood stand made later during the 19th century. Total size: 6 3/4" high x 8 1/4" wide including handles. Bronze alone is 6 1/4" high

Antique Chinese porcelain plate circa 1900's (Qing Dynasty). The plate is beautifully painted with a sage holding a sprig of bamboo riding a blue celadon. The Sage and fish are accompanied by a gold winged dog. There are three seals. The plate is bordered with three registers. It measures 11.75" wide by 9" tall. The base has four bats, one on each side. The edge of the plate has old fitters from age.

This is a clay figure of "Tenjin", the god of learning and a great and important figure in the history of Japanese culture.

It is obviously from the Mid Edo Period and one of the most impressing pieces of art in our collection with its mysterious and spiritual character.

We offer this Tenjin figure with a wooden stand, which was built by a former owner. As you can notice on the photos, it has some scratches and hairline cracks, which do not diminish its antique effect.
