Japanese Arita porcelain round form deep dish decorated in underglaze blue with a karashishi (Buddhist lion dog) among leafy flowers set against a faintly celadon tinted white ground. The back bears an abbreviated apocryphal Chinese Ming dynasty Chenghua reign mark (Taimin nenka) on the glazed base. The foot rim is unglazed. A mid Edo period carved woodn mask for Shishi-mai festival dance covered in red and black lacquer with gilded teath and eyes in rarely seen good condition. The mask is used with the hand, not worn over the head, the dancer usually hidden beneath a long flowing cape. It is 22 x 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 x 9 inches) excluding the horn and ears. Mother of pearl is inset into the silver powder dusted lattice set between red lacquered pillars forming this art-deco era lacquer vase enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Iwamura Sadao (1912-1944).
