A small Nabeshima plate or bowl decorated with three stylized chrysanthemun medaillons among radial motifs. The back showing the "shippo" pattern with ribbons and foot ring with comb pattern in underglaze blue. Condition: fine, minimal wear, no restorations, hairlines or chips. Charming Japanese small tansu (merchant's chest) in original red lacquer finish with black lacquer frame, made with Kuri (chestnut) front drawers and Sugi (cypress) sides. Beautiful small wooden jizai, or pothook. This type is called Daikoku, after the shape of Daikoku’s hat. These hangers were suspended with a rope from a heavy beam, over the sunken hearth. From the hanger an adjustable hook was hung that held the kettle. Good piece of mingei.
Zelkova wood with rests of smut, especially in the grooves.
Japan, 19th century.
H 9.5; w 9.25; 2.75 inches.
Slight traces of usage, very good condition.

Finely cast bronze censer on three cloud-shaped feet with a décor on the body of an elephant on one side, a baku or tapir on the other on a background of very fine repetitive fretwork, patinated in a rich brown. Stick-like handles parallel to the body. Bottom left undecorated, with a seal: Seimin sei (Cast by Seimin). Japan, Edo period, early 19th century.
Original cover lost and replaced by a wooden Chinese cover.

A fine small ivory okimono of Jurojin holding a peach with a deer at his side. The figurine measures 2.25" (5.7 cm) high. Signed on bottom, it is in excellent condition. Price $650 USD.
The ivory stand does not go with the okimono, but we like them displayed together. Stand measures 1.75" (4.4 cm) and has some age cracks, but it is solid. Stand price $125 USD.

18th Century Japanese small antique scroll painting of a koi leaping up a waterfall. Beautifully painted with great expression, the fish leaps from the churning waters below. Painted in sumi ink on paper and mounted on lovely antique obi silk with a fan motif. Signed by the artist. 18th century (pvt. Collection purchased in Japan in early 1980's)

Antique Japanese small merchant's box. Although this tansu has the appearance of a gyosho bako (peddler's box), it does not have loops for carrying straps. It was probably custom made for a merchant's raised platform area. All of the drawers feature hand forged iron lock plates and mounts. A small Japanese Arita kilns blue and white porcelain sauce dish, or mamezara, of mokko-gata form. Namban (or Nanban, Southern barbarian) decoration of a foreign figure, with dog, falconing in picturesque landscape. Painterly shironuki decoration in the cavetto of cranes flying among clouds. Edo period, Circa 1800. Good condition for its age, with two small chips inside the foot rim and a small glaze abrasion just above the foot rim. About 3 15/16 inches (10 cm) square.

An unusually small and rare antique Japanese Cha Tansu (tea chest) made of Kuwa (Mulberry) and Kuri (Chestnut) woods. All original bronze hardware. Two sliding doors behind which tea accessories were stored. A lift-out door behind which housed a tea canister of dried tea leaves ready for brewing. With four drawers of varying sizes to store additional tea accoutrements.

A small cast iron Japanese tetsubin of slightly flared cylindrical form, decorated in relief to one side with maple leaves floating on a stream against a textured ground. The backside is plain save for the textured ground and the foundry mark for Kinshudo. The cover is flat with a pine cone finial and the handle can be moved to either side. In excellent condition, it measures 2.5 inches high excluding the handle, diameter about 3" at widest. Dates late 19th Century.
