SOLD Antique Japanese Keyaki (elm) choba tansu (merchant chest) with original golden brown finish. Used to store important documents for ones business. Made from all Keyaki hardwood with dramatic, gorgeous graining seen throughout. Two large sliding front panels of beautiful swirling natural burl patterns. Five locking drawers beneath for additional drawer storage. Early Meiji Period (1868 - 1912).

$395.00 A healthy round-faced, plump figured, seated boy wearing a typical high hat of boy doll figures of the period. He is also wearing a checker-patterned loincloth. His hands are positioned under his chin, where he is holding his hat ties together. The stoneware was formed with a mold (you can see the faint molding line on both sides and underneath--it is not a crack.) The surface has a natural patina from age.
Age: Late 19th Century. Size: H. 10.5cm. W. Base. 7.5cm...

$2800.00 This is Yogi used in the Tohoku district of Edo period. This is Yogi which a rich landscape gardener used. As for this, a pattern of the lower part is a bamboo fence. This has the W kirimon which twined Tang grass around the upper part.
As for this, cotton is spun by hand. The bamboo fence which this is the indigo plant light and shade, and was drawn is very unusually precious.
And the bamboo fence is drawn from the left to the right with a curve to be sunk. It resembles Koetu-Kaki...

Sealed Yuhan in Japanese within the image. Condition: Very good to excellent with slight toning of paper. This rarely seen print is also signed "Y. Ito" in pencil and titled "Cryptomeria Highway, Nikko" with edition number 12/25.

Shibori is a very labor intensive style of dying fabric in which small areas are tied and twisted to create dramatic patterns. Jacquard weaving is done on a special loom and results in complex patterns.

The rim has been cut in the shape of a hissen (brush washer - the shape prevents a brush placed on the rim to roll off). The thinly thrown body is covered with the typical transparent Karatsu type of ash glaze. Under the glaze is a decoration in iron oxide representing some foliage on the one side and a three dot mon of the Nakasato family...
