One of three sumptuous chawan in vibrant red, beautifully crafted on the potters wheel by Masatomo Toi complete with signed wooden box. It has a very thin lip, which may fool the viewer into thinking it is light, however it has a respectable weight, as the bowl is thicker at the bottom to both contain the heat and protect the hands of the holder from the boiling tea contained within. A single thumbprint in platinum marks the series. The unglazed base is also coated in platinum...

It is difficult to put a descriptive on the colors of these bowls crafted on the potters wheel by Masatomo Toi. This one is the color of plums, or aubergine, or somewhere in between. The photographs do not capture the translucence or light of the purple glaze...

Dry lacquer Noh mask depicting the character of Kokushiki-Jo and designed to represent divine blessings. Inscription at the back of the mask. Japan, early 20th century, maybe earlier. NOTE: This mask is used exclusively in "Okina", an ancient dance ritual said to be close to the roots of Noh. Okina is viewed as sacred and therefore accorded a different status from other items in the Noh repertoire...

Gold gleams on the dragon shaped prow of this boat shaped object in the style of Kyoto’s Ninsei ware. The house on top is meant to be filled with ash and serves as an incense burner. Removed it reveals a glazed compartment in which flowers can be placed, allowing the versatile object to be not only a display on its own, but also to act as a vase and or incense burner...

We asked Toi for a “Tea Bowl” of his imagining and here we have this unique vision in frothy vivid colors studded with golden spikes. The red and white glazes seem puffed up, while the blue flows naturally between. The raw clay of the base too has been covered in liquefied gold. It is 13 cm diameter plus the thorns and in perfect condition. It comes with a signed wooden box titled Kin Hoshi Konsai Wan directly from the artist...

This is the earliest piece in our current exhibition highlighting the work of Masatomo Toi. A bit more aggressive and grungy than the growingly refined works he is creating today. This is like studded leather over a sex pistols T-shirt, and reflects the angst and aggressiveness of the artist when we first met him as a student at the ceramics research facility in Gifu. An antique Japanese Iwayado Tansu made of Kiri (Paulownia) and Yamasugi (slow growth mountain Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware and Urushi lacquer finish. Main top drawer lock plate has a flying Phoenix with surrounding drawer lock plates featuring Paulownia leaves from which the bird drinks the collected dew to get its energy. A locking bar secures two drawers and a hinged door opens to access four small drawers...

An antique Japanese 2 section Nagoya Mizuya Tansu (kitchen chest) made of Hinoki (Cypress) wood. Cast iron hardware including the Warabite handles. Upper half features 2 pairs of sliding doors and a set of three side by side drawers. Lower half has 2 sliding doors with 2 side by side drawers. The shallow design would accommodate the narrowest of hallways.

A rare antique Japanese Ryo Biraki (hinged double door) Kimono Tansu made of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Warabite style handles. The main lock plate features the Paulownia motif with its blooming flowers. The doors have the raised seed pod corners. The hinges display a crescent moon style mount and the drawers handles are positioned close together and below the center line atypical of most other Tansu.
