Over time, through use and handling, the cinnabar lacquer wears off to reveal the black lacquer base underneath. Over time, through use and handling, the cinnabar lacquer wears off to reveal the black lacquer base underneath as seen on this example, in an effect likened to the negoro effect seen in Japanese lacquerware.
