Japanese calligraphy box made with Keyaki (elm) wood in original dark red lacquer finish. The lid lifts open on three iron hinges with a top iron handle to a shallow lacquered compartment for storing calligraphy papers, and closes securely with a small iron latch. The front of the box holds three drawers with iron lock plates and handles on floral shaped iron mounts.

A very rare and unusual large Chinese scroll painting done in the Japanese style of a bird in a cage with a bamboo tree and netting. Some gold leaf work on the leaves. A famille rose enameled porcelain plate decorated with dragons, phoenix, crane, butterflies and other motifs on coral-red ground, a six character red enamel "Da Qing Guangxu Nian Zhi" mark is on the bottom. This plate was one of the party wares with similar designs made for Emperor Guangxu's wedding in 1888. The plate is in excellent condition beside some scratches on enamel - no chip, no hairline and no restoration. Diameter: 9"
