19th C wood netsuke depicting a fisherman driving a boat with a stick. The boat is with the bucket in the middle. Unsigned. Unsigned 1 ¾” x 1 ¼ ”.

Japanese 19thC sashi stag horn netsuke depicting a dried salmon. Beautiful patina. Bite marks on lower jaw and beyond upper himatoshi, probably mice. They also have the same patina as the rest of the netsuke, so must be old. Unsigned. Unsigned 4 ¼ ” x 1 ”.

A pair of Japanese, Edo period, copper alloy menuki depicting buffalo. Horns, hooves and spots highlighted with gold hirazogan overlay. Good condition. Each about 1 1/8 inches.

A fine Meiji or Taisho period Eiraku kiln aubergine glazed porcelain vase. Rubbed gilt enamel highlights over archaistic relief decoration in manner of the Eastern Zhou dynasty or Western Han dynasty. The vase, with base reminiscent of the Hu form but with elongated neck, harmoniously combines modern and ancient design sense. The blank apparently two symmetrical halves, joined (see closeup images revealing raised glaze where a seam might be). Eiraku seal mark on the foot. Good condition...

A stellar Oribe vase by Koie Ryoji draped in thick green glaze accentuating the gashes in the sides enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled simply Tsubo. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter, 18.5 cm (7-1/2 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
Koie Ryoji (1938-2020) was born in Tokoname and graduated the Tokoname industrial school before moving on to work at a tile factory in 1957, where he would lose two fingers in an industrial accident...

In folklore, these two figures are often shown together, as Tenaga's long arms allow him to reach into the water to catch fish while he is carried on Ashinaga's long legs. The netsuke in the image shows Tenaga on Ashinaga's back, with a small crab visible on Ashinaga's foot. Boxwood. Unsigned. 4½ ” x 1 ½ ” x 1 ¼”.

This child kimono is hand-dyed with Yuzen dyeing, indicating that it was worn by members of the upper class. The frugality edicts issued in the late Edo period (1841-1843) had a major impact on the patterns worn by commoners. This kimono exemplifies this characteristic. At the time, kimonos with bold, ornate patterns were not permitted. As a result, people preferred kimonos with delicate hems, like this one.
