Made of keyaki Hardwood with Stunning original glowing finish, accented by round black iron handles with locking bar. Japanese hanging tobacco pipe set consisting of a wooden pipe holder and a wood tobacco box in the form of the 2 mythical fishermen Ashinaga (Long Legs) and Tenaga (Long Arms). Tenaga's face lifts and functions as a cover for the tobacco box which still has much of the original tobacco inside. Ashinaga, the elongated standing figure is the pipe holder which also serves as a scoop. In excellent condition except for the ojime (sliding ball) which is missing most of it's lacquer...

Japanese vase of convex shape, Totai decoration of a bird and a butterfly among leaves and berry bushes. The motif created by thin metal threads is filled in with colored lacquer and polished. The brown lacquer background is carved as to resemble tree bark (totai). This complicated technique for decoration on porcelain was in use in Japan in the 1920’s and 30’s.The base with old paper label, indistinct letters in blue and the word “Lacquer”. A stunning work by Shigaraki Legend Tsujimura Shiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box inside the lid of which is scrawled a nude figure and the epitaph NY 5/24/06. It is known that when in New York at an exhibition in 2006 the artist was entertained at a gentlemen’s club and was purported to have had a very good time. This is likely a reference to that event.
