Antique Japanese Shō, mouth organ (flute) used in Gagaku (classical performances traditionally for the imperial court). A musician blows through the silver lined protruding mouthpiece. The air travels through the bamboo tubes creating notes (said to sound like the Ho bird or phoenix). Skillful musicians are able to blow air in and out of the mouth pieces creating sustained, uninterrupted notes.
The arrangement of bamboo tubes are said to resemble the folded wings of the phoenix...

Antique Japanese set of five lotus leaves and blossoms. Carved of wood and lacquered silver. Made for a Buddhist altar, these leaves and blossoms symbolize the stages of the path toward enlightenment. Every petal of the lotus flower is carved separately. Each blossom and leaf comes fitted with a custom metal stand so they can be rearranged at will.

Antique Japanese Lacquer Fubako, a box used to store document. Of deep rectangular shape, decorated with twigs of different flowers, mainly chrysanthemum and morning glory and leaves in gold and silver hira maki-e on a gold nashiji ground. The interior in loose nashiji on black ground. Fitted with two metal mon rings. Size: L 38 x W 7,5 x 8,5 cm. Edo (1603-1868) 19th century. Condition: Good with a few minor nicks along the inner corner of the lid(see last picture)...

Japanese cigarette case / tobacco box, lacquer on copper with mother of pearl inlay of flowers and birds to both sides. Made in Nagasaki and exported to Europe, where it was given as a Christmas present in 1867 - dedication and date engraved to the inside of the box lid. Measures: 6 " / 15.2 x 3 " / 7.3 cm, height 2/3 ” / 1.7 cm. Condition: the lid with cracks and some loss to the lacquer.

A fine openwork Bamboo Flower Basket, Hanakago by Suzuki Gengesai (1891–1950) Kanto region ( influenced by Chikuunsai II). Made with lacquered madake bamboo strips. Original bamboo water container Otoshi, with red lacquer in the inside. Signed: made by Suzuki Gengesai (zo). Size:　H. 41.8cm W 18.3cm　L 19.2cm. Very good condition.

An antique Japanese calligraphy box (Kakesuzuri Bako) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware with locking drawer and working key. Hinged cover opens to a removable tray used to house a calligraphy inkstone and ink sticks. Three drawers for storing writing paper, brushes and money.

Rarely seen Japanese Haisen Bowl with wonderful gold Makie (Maki-e), made around 1900 during the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). The wooden-based bowl is coated with high quality Japanese lacquer.

Seashells are molded and hand-painted inside of the bowl by gold Maki-e technique. This type of bowl is called "HAISEN" in Japanese...

Antique Japanese hokai, lidded container for Ka-awase shell game. This unusual square shaped hokai has a footed base and it's sides are fashioned with many horizontal ridges. With faceted corners and intricate gold and black lacquer. A flower and lattice motif with reserves of birds and young pine shoots. The interior of the box is lacquered a dark brownish black. Extensive gilt copper hardware with incised details of scrolling vines...

An original pair of rare Edo period Apsara heavenly Tennyo temple beings. Each has a gold gilt finish with condition consistent with age. Both are complete and ready to be installed.
Left tennyo is depicted with drum suspended from her waist and holding a pair of sticks. The righ is holding a bell and holds Shuni mudra with right hand, symbolizing patience and discipline...

Wooden lectern covered with black lacquer, decorated with Japanese seignorial emblems (Mon) with gold powder. The emblems are treated in three different versions, all three of excellent lacquer quality in a very elegant style. The lectern can be dismantled into 4 parts, the box, the drawer, the top and the axis, the elements are assembled using mercury-gilded copper frames, which are finely chiseled with scrolls of stylized plants on a nanako background...

Small box and cover made of very thinly cut keyaki (Zelkova) wood, in oblong shape with rounded corners. The domed cover is decorated in black polished lacquer, black ishime lacquer, gold lacquer inlaid with small pieces of mother-of-pearl. An open folding fan wraps around the surface of the cover, continuing onto the sides, decorated with parting clouds, showing silhouettes of birds flying over waves.

Inside, the surface is covered in thin brown lacquer, allowing the wood grain to show...

Small box and cover. The base of the box made of kiri wood (Paulownia), the cover made of kiri and keyaki (Zelkova) wood, diagonally joined together. The outside of the cover is decorated with two black shijimi fresh-water clam shells in kiji makie technique (applying makie lacquer decoration to natural wood).

Inside of the cover signed with red lacquer seal: Tairei; bottom of box stamped seal of the wood worker who made the box: ‘To’ inside a double gourd.

Eight-sided, flared shaped lacquer kobako box, following the decoration on the lid depicting a basket of flowers, composed of peonies and chrysanthemums in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e lacquer on a nashi-ji background. The edge is decorated with cherry blossoms in gold and silver takamaki-e. Interior and base in nashi-ji.

An exquisite lacquered box covered in gold powder prominently bearing the imperial crest given as a gift to Baron Nakamura Satoru in Meiji 44 (1911). According to the inside of the lid this box was created for the Meiji emperor and given in gratitude to the Baron for his support in creating the Keanfu memorial for fallen soldiers of the Russo-Japanese war. The box is an exquisite example of Imperial splendor featuring leaves tinged with kiri-gane gold inlay over powdered gold on a surface dust...
