Large Japanese Meiji period rounded square form black lacquered wood deep tray decorated in gold and polychrome accents with three birds among flowers and bamboo above a stream at the bottom. The rim is gold. 14 3/4" square with a lip nearly 2 1/4" high. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition with only a few fine scratches on the back. Please note that the light spots in the black background are reflection. From the collection of a Japanese woman in Tucson, Arizona.

Tempestuous waves in fine gold lines splash between lightning shapes decorated with reed curtains on the sides of this singular lacquered wooden koro with woven silver lid dating from the Momoyama to opening of the Edo period, Later 16th to early 17th century. It is 8.5 cm (3-1/4 inches) high, 7.5 cm (3 inches) diameter. The worn base has been re-lacquered to protect the wood core from splitting or cracking otherwise is entirely original to the period.

Serene 17th Century Japanese standing gold gilt buddha. Original gold gifting layered over beautifully hand carved gently wood. The buddha stands upon its original lotus base in which both feet sit and slot into the base. The golden rays rises from behind rising in all directions. Carved at a very high level with detail seen down to the smallest touch. In all, there are three removable section. Stunning natural patina that has age very well with Temple incense.

Shishi prance across the mottled Kiri-wood surface of this Momoyama to early Edo period Koro in gold and silver maki-e and mother of pearl inlay. A copper insert contains the fragrant incense ash. There is a hand forged iron staple top and bottom of one ancient crack testament to age. It likely once had a silver hoya (cover) which has disappeared over the centuries...

Himotoshi are decorated with cherry blossoms in shibuichi. The kagamibuta bowl is made of walrus tooth and the shibuichi plate represents a kabuki actor in relief. Diameter 4cm. On a black lacquer ground, the decoration in gold and brown takamaki-e represents two shibuichi eagles resting on rocks among trees and foliage. The interior of the compartments is in Nashiji lacquer. The kagamibuta bowl is made of openwork bone decorated with flowers with a shibuichi plate decorated with a rain dragon. The ojime is also in shibuichi with geometric patterns. Some wear due to use. Height 6,2cm.
