Set of three Japanese Meiji period Satsuma cups and saucers finely decorated with a dense floral pattern in overglaze enamels and gilt highlights on a cream-colored crackle glaze ground. A geometric band extends around the rim of the saucers. One cup has an unreadable rectangular impressed mark on the base. Circa 1900 to early 20th century. Saucer: 4 1/4" diameter; Cup: 2 3/16" high. Shugo Takauchi was born in 1937 and is based in Mashiko of the Tochigi Prefecture in Japan. He worked as a company employee before visiting Mashiko and discovering Shōji Hamada's work. He then decided to leave his life as a salaryman and established his own kiln in 1968. Since the late 1960's, he has had a very successful career as a potter with an extensive number of followers. He primarily fires Mino, Shino and Oribe ash-glazed and black wares...

Japanese Taisho to Showa period bulbous form Satsuma vase decorated in polychrome enamel and gilt highlights with flowering branches draping from the top set against a creamy white Satsuma earthenware background with splashes of gold. A dense floral collar encircles the neck below an everted, flattened mouth covered in gilt. The base holds a "Taniguchi" mark. Dates circa 1920s to 1930s. 6 1/4" high x about 6 3/4" diameter. Very good overall condition. From a Tucson, Arizona collection.

Modern pottery made in Mashiko today is found in many styles, on account of the creative freedom brought to Mashiko by Shoji Hamada. The style was popularized in 1930 when Hamada, later designated as a Living National Treasure, set up a kiln in Mashiko. excellent condition. 46cm in diameter x 8cm tall. Ca. 1980

This amazing incense burner is shaped like a cottage. The roof is removable and the incense fumes escape through four chimneys made in the roof. The cottage is built with a white Kyoto stoneware plates, the details are incised in hollow or modeled in slight relief and enameled in green, red and gold. This is a very rare form of incense burner, difficult to create, the firing cracks are there to testify to this...
