Fine Chinese Western Han Dynasty Burnished Pottery Jar
This fine and rare pottery jar was made during Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) or possibly a little earlier. It is made from a relatively highly-fired fine-grained grey pottery and has a burnished surface, very smooth to the touch. The wide body is decorated with two raised bands around the waist that have been impressed with geometric patterns. Around the shoulder there are two bands of impressed lines... A rectangular porcelain snuff bottle, finely painted with ladies in a mountainous landscape respectively in a garden. Enameled in the "Famille rose" palette, the sides with stylized dragon heads between lattice work in overglaze blue. The mouthrim with gilding residue, the stopper made of amber-imitating material, bone spoon. Condition: mouthrim slightly chipped, wear to decoration, some fritting. Dimension: total height: c. 5.8 cm, 3.3 x 1.7 cm.

The gu form vessel was first developed in the Shang Dynasty when it was used for both drinking wine and for offering ritual libations. Bowl with a carved centralized flower inside upright sprays, bordered by combed lines and is covered overall in a green celadon glaze, except for the base.
Measurements: diameter (7.5”inches) across.
Condition: there is a very small glaze flake at the corner of the rim but is otherwise in perfect condition. No repairs, UV light checked...

A superbly conceived design; jars of this general type have been found in excavations dating as far back as the Spring and Autumn Period (770-475 BC)... Chinese Qing dynasty Qianlong period round form deep dish decorated in underglaze blue on a faintly celadon tinted white porcelain ground with a stylized qilong dragon in the central panel surrounded by three qilong extending around the well. Four small lingzhi fungus leaves decorate the exterior. The base and foot are unglazed. 10 3/4” diameter x 2 1/8" high. 18th century.
