A unique object for the scholar’s table made of hardwood root, partly sculptured in the shape of two peaches attached to a branch with two leaves. The peach have a strong symbolic meaning in Chinese culture, it is a symbol of longevity and immortality; it is said that the peach tree grows in the orchard of Xiwangmu, The Queen Mother of the West. Peaches are common to Chinese art. Size: roughly 20 x 18 x 15 cm. Qing, 19th cent. Condition: very good!

Chinese late Qing dynasty rectangular form lacquered wood scholar's desk tray or serving tray, each side with two long pierced openings to the upright walls, each corner with a low raised foot. Late 19th to early 20th century. 13 1/8” x nearly 8 3/4” x 1 1/2” high. Very good, solid overall condition with minor separations in the wood.
