This large and attractive porcelain dish was made during the 14th century at the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province. It is "heavily-potted" with repeated incised vertical lines around the cavetto. It is coated in thick green glaze of very good colour. The unglazed recessed base has fired to a reddish-brown colour.

Rare Chinese Tang Dynasty Changsha Glazed Stoneware Bowl

This rare decorated glazed stoneware bowl was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906) at the Changsha kilns, Hunan province, generally accepted to be the first kilns to produce underglaze polychrome decorated ceramics. The attractive abstract design is in brown and green glazes that are finely-crackled. The glaze on the underside falls short of the foot, showing the pale stoneware body.

The very fine porcelain is covered with famille verte enamels. Decorated with palace scenes in storerooms. Beautiful workmanship. Silver mount. Protective box lined with silk and a very supple, fine leather, probably kid? This vase is certainly antique, 1900 or earlier. It does not appear to be a Chinese creation, nor Japanese either. It could be European, but the designs appear to have been traced by an Asian artist. Good condition. Mounts glued to plaster. Vase only: H 28cm Box: 34x18x17cm

The dish is made of hard porcelain. The decoration is a transfer of a photo of Sun Yat Sen, a politician who was the first president of the Chinese Republic, accompanied by his wife. He was president in 1912 for a few months, then again from 1917 until his death in 1925. In the photo, the clothing is more reminiscent of the fashion of the 1900s than of the roaring post-war years.
