Fine Chinese Han Dynasty Burnished Pottery Cocoon Jar

This wonderfully-shaped pottery jar was made during the early part of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) or possibly as early as the Qin Dynasty (221 - 206 BC). This type of jar is often referred to as a "cocoon jar" due to the shape of its body. Its function was that of a grain storage jar.

It is 1.27 inches (3.25 cm) tall by 13.7 inches (34.75 cm) wide. It is 2.3 lb.

This very fine dish was made during the early part of the Qianlong reign (1736 - 1795) or possibly as early as the Yongzheng reign (1723 - 1735) of the Qing dynasty. The pattern, in a variety of brightly-coloured enamels and gilding, features a flowering prunus branch and peony blossoms. The border is finely-decorated with geometric patterns and flower sprays.
