The piece has a perforation inside the raised squarish tube-like structure which might indicate that the piece was intended as the finial to a pin, or an inlay. This very rare pottery tool was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang phase (c.2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. It was used for smoothing / burnishing the surface of pottery vessels. Length 8 cm. "Calcified" soil deposits on surface in places, no sign of repair. Such tools are extremely rare.
