Early 19th Century, nicely hand-carved and engraved boxwood netsuke depicting a Chinese Sages riding an Ox while holding peonies in both hands, a symbol of prosperity or congratulations between friends. Chimney himotoshi that starts on the bottom of the platform where the ox stands, and continues through any of the spaces made by the legs of the ox. Rich patination. Unsigned.

$675.00 An antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tsukue made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Suginoki (Cryptomeria) woods. Two drawers used for the storage of an inkstone and brushes as well as paper for writing transaction records and receipts. The drawer interiors have minor ink stains which is a testament to its usage and function.

To the right of this are two small drawers. The lower portion of the chest has two medium sized drawers and one full-width drawer on the bottom. Two sliding glass doors were used to showcase the store owner's wares with two drawers below for safe keeping the inventory. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Gunbai style handles. Drawer corners feature the raised tealeaf design suggesting this chest originated in the Yonezawa region of Japan. Constructed using straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails.

Sold, Thank you! A true part of Kyoto modern ceramic history, this robust vase reminiscent of Okinawan Kaki-otoshi ware was created at the Kyoto 2nd Industrial School circa 1925. It comes in the original wooden box titled Black Glazed Vase with Flower Motif, and signed inside Kyoto Shiritsu Dai Ni Kogyo Gakko followed by a large red seal. It is 27 cm tall, 23 cm diameter and in excellent condition. The roots of the mingei movement, ravaging the Japanese ceramic world at the time, are clearly evident.

The Hindu water creature has the head of an elephant/deer and the body of a crocodile (or water monitor) giving it a dragon-like/serpentine appearance. Makara are often seen guarding entrances to holy spaces. This makara head was most likely once part of a temple. The Vahana (vehicle) of the goddess Ganga is a makara.
