GOD BULL TALISMAN

Traditional paper talisman (lithography) for fire prevention from Three Mountains of Dewa (ref. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mountains_of_Dewa) as a popular Shugendo's mountain, called 'Kamiushifuda' (lit. 'God bull talisman'), originally dated back to Edo period (1603-1868) then mounted for a hanging scroll in the later years, Taisho period (1912-1926). approx. 135 x 37cm (53.14 x 14.56in)...

A horrifying image of a ghostly apparition accompanied by a Buddhist verse engraved into this long bamboo incense container by Ishii Matetsu. It is expertly crafted. The verse reads:
Katsu!
Dokusei Dokushi Dokko Dokurai
The literal translation sounds quite cold, but in Buddhist teaching it means: We enter the world alone; we depart it alone. Do not depend upon others for your happiness, rely upon yourself and live your life in your way to the fullest...

Scroll painting of a female ghost appearing out of the mist near a waterfall. Painted after the famous image by Maruyama Okyo, the ghost of Oyuki, a lovely woman who died young. Her hair hangs loose over her face and shoulders. She hovers near the roaring water with one hand tucked into her kimono. Oyuki is a subject in Nihok Sandai Kaidan (Japan's "Three Great Ghost Stories")...

Japanese scroll painting of skeletons, one dancing and one playing a shamisen. Strewn over the ground are skulls and a giant gourd filled with drink. The calligraphy on the top of the scroll states that even the great sage Boddhidaruma and the beautiful Onna no Komachi are Doitsu Byodo (the same as the rest of us) when their flesh is stripped away...

A fine Japanese cloisonne charger featuring a central medallion with a beautiful ho-ho bird, Japanese phoenix, on a goldstone ground. It is in excellent condition and dates late Meiji period, circa 1910. Measures 12 inches diameter.

Here we see a Chinese style celadon floral bowl by one of the 5 Imperial Court Artists of Meiji. The potter, Sozan, spent his life perfecting techniques for celadon production first used in the Southern Song Dynasty as evidenced here with his powdery blue “kinuta” glaze...

Young boy in cast bronze. The subject is treated with breathtaking realism, thoughtful expression, body movement, everything is perfect and announces one of the greatest artists of his time. Examination of the fishing rod confirms this. Indeed this rod is so thin that it could not be cast, it was made patiently with a file starting with the thin end. It is movingly realistic with the knots and twists of growth. It is extremely fragile because bronze is a brittle metal...

Antique Japanese painting in 3 panels of a group of cranes. 8 adult cranes stand with two chicks. They are painted large scale and stand out dramatically against an all gold ground. Painted in mineral colors and gold leaf on paper and mounted in 3 frames. The signature & seal both show the painter's name as 松究 Shо̄kyū.

Layer upon layer of lacquer has been carved with scrolling designs revealing the depth of the surface in a style known as Guri by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in a wooden box titled Guri Kobon. It is 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 inches) and in excellent condition, the artist seal inlayed in mother of pearl beneath. The box is annotated by his adopted daughter and heir Torako (Suwa Sozan II)...

A small Raku style Chawan by Suwa Sozan I decorated with a mountain by Daitokuji priest Sohan Gempo (Murasakino Shoun) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The mountain image in a single dark stroke is accented by fluctuating knife marks in the clay surface like a blowing breeze...

A unique custom made antique Japanese winter door coffee table on iron stand with built-in brazier-style display area. Iron stand was designed using faux arts and crafts style through mortise and tenon joinery. Door was made using framework of Hinoki (Cypress) with two solid Akita Sugi (Akita Cryptomeria) panels.

An exceedingly rare (in fact the only one I have ever seen) Tenmoku-Dai stand for a Tenmoku Chawan by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuruwa Tenmoku Dai (Curved Circular Tea Bowl Stand). It is made of layer upon layer of lacquer, carved with scrolling designs revealing the depth of the lacquer in a style known as Guri. The artist has carved his seal into the inside of the base. It is 15 cm (6 inches) diameter7.5 cm (3 inches) tall and in excellent condition.
