Rare Japanese Funa Tansu (captain's ship chest) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) wood in original medium brown finish. The upper portion has a large front drawer with kakute (squared) iron handles and decorative iron plating, lined in attractive silver rice paper. The bottom portion is very unusual because the right door opens on a hinge while the left door slides on a track revealing four small drawers also lined in silver rice paper...

Antique Japanese wedding kimono (uchikake). Made of beautiful silk brocade originally intended for an obi. Gold and green with woven pattern of pine, bamboo and chrysanthemums. The lining is sewn of red silk and the hem is padded. Meiji Period. Size: 61" high x 47 1/2" wide (sleeve to sleeve).

Tall Japanese Boy's Day banner depicting 3 samurai on horseback. Wonderfully dramatic scene with swords drawn and crashing waves on a black ground. Bright colors in paste resist dye on cotton. The top of the banner is decorated with a wood sorrel (katabami) mon. Taisho Period. Size: 23 1/2 feet high x 33 inches wide.

Incredibly charming Japanese bronze incenser in the form of a floppy eared dog, with a curly tail and and a real bell handing off of his neck. A pierced lid comes off of his back to place incense inside, which would then pillow forth from the mouth. Original natural patina from antiquity. A set of five sencha steeped tea tea cups by the first Suwa Sozan decorated with three seasonal or auspidcious fruits and a poem by famed literatus Tomioka Tessai enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Each cup is 2-1/4 x 2 inches (5.7 x 5 cm) and is in fine condition.
Sozan I (1852-1922) was born in Kutani country, present day Ishikawa prefecture, where he initially studied before moving to Tokyo in 1875...

Born in Tokyo Ono Bakufu (1888-1976) relocated to central Japan after the great Kanto earthquake of 1923 where he became an honorary member of the Hyogo Prefectural Academy of Fine Arts...

Antique Japanese matching Katana (long) and Wakazashi (short) swords, from the Shinto Period (1579-1763). Both swords have a beautiful dark brown patina on the tang with visible laminar construction on the blades. The blades have been fully polished and have paper work from the NBRHK in Japan. Each sword comes with a matching bag for protection. Wonderful details including side knives and menuki. The tsuba on the Wakizashi is shakudo...
