Splashes of Jackson Pollock in iron and ash festoon the flaring form of this sake-cup by Murakoshi Takuma enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Sake-nomi. The base is thick, allowing the cup to be quite stable, while the narrow foot leads to a wide, flaring rim, which makes it both easy to hold, and perhaps far too easy to drink from. It I 9 x 8 x 5.5 cm (roughly 3-1/2 inches diameter, 2-1/4 inches tall) and in perfect condition, directly from the artist...

A Hirado blue and white porcelain bowl. Dragon decoration on the interior center. Flowerhead in mokkogata reserves decoration along the interior below the rim with pale iron oxide wash. Intricate dragon and phoenix decoration around the exterior. The unglazed bottom and foot with the smooth biscuit characteristic of the kiln. Taisho period. Good condition. Diameter, 5 1/2 inches. Set for carrying lunch. Bamboo and rattan basketry box lined with green brocade, the outside with an intricate diamond pattern woven in two colors, the corners fortified with leather. Dangling from one of the brass handles is a natural gourd with silver stopper and a lacquer sake cup, imitating Tamba stoneware. Japan, Meiji era, early 20th century.
