All handmade, with thumb marks to base and rim of lid. Height including lid "4 ½ / 11.5 cm. Condition: no bamboo handle, otherwise fine.

An interesting dish of barbed, lotus petal, form with a bulls eye base, janome, decorated in Nanga style, monochrome (sumi-e) landscape paintings in the Chinese Literati tradition of Southern China, a school particularly associated with the Nagasaki area and the work of the Kameyama kiln, where it is believed artists of this school provided designs for use on their wares. The dish is in the style of the Kameyama kiln, but is marked with a simple two character mark in seal form reading “tama-y...

Urushi bowl made by Kizaki Tsukiho (1984~) who is an emerging urushi craftsman in Shiga Pref. He makes a wood bowl himself and paints urushi too, generally it is done by each craftsman. Texture is rather rough comparing with common urushi bowl but stronger. Contemporary. In excellent condition. Diameter:11.5cm H:8.3cm

Three cups and saucer trays by Noritake, Japan, mid 50’s. Saucers shaped like water lily leaves – a modernist design also reminding of the painter’s palette shape so much in vogue in the 50’s in ceramics, jewelry, teak wood and more. The cups to fit at one side, in order to allow for a sandwich or some biscuits. The back with the N and ribbon mark in use from 1953. Width of saucers "9 ½ / 24 cm, height of cups "2 2/3 / 6.8 cm. Condition: fine.

A finely potted Hirado dish featuring three figures wearing capes and carrying heavy packages upon their backs descending down a high mountain trail. Inferred by the small gnarled Pine trees on the wayside. Although no particular scene is identifiable the figures are in Hokusai “style”. The reverse is painted with a Karakusa arabesque and has a single spur mark within the base of the footring. The dish dates to the late Edo period and the middle of the 19th century...

A fine large straight sided Japanese Ko Imari cup, inoguchi, or hogs mouth beaker; sometimes referred to as “soba choko”, a cup for “soba” buckwheat noodles. It is decorated primarily in underglaze blue with a leaping Chinese Lion or karashishi in a landscape of rocks and Tree Peonies, botan, a classic subject in Japanese art known as “Botan-ni-Shishi”, which combines the auspicious qualities of the King of Beasts and King of Flowers...

Very nice 2 Japanese Gilded and Lacquered on Brass Fusuma Sliding Door Handles, early 1900's, 3 1/4" diameter, 1/2" deep, impressed vines design on rounded soft brown Lacquered Brass front with gilded Brass rims, 2 nail holes on the sides, the condition is good, probably used in very elegant and important home in Japan.

Furoshiki (wrapping cloth) with owner's name, made of asa (hemp) whose warps and wefts are hand-plied. It has 4 mending patches with same cloth as the ground. It has un-dyed cotton cloth for reinforcement in the middle and has sashiko. Used but in excellent condition. The first half of the 20th century. 132cm x 138cm

Pilgrim's sodenashi made of hand-spun cotton with writhings which are the name of the pilgrim, the year (Meiji 5, 1871) etc. The places of pilgrimage is Saigoku Sanju-Sansho (33 holy places in the west) which are for worship of Kannon and the oldest places of pilgrimage. Those are located in Kyoto, Osaka, Gifu, Hyogo, Nara, Shiga and Wakayama. The cloth in the back is also hand-spun cotton and vegetable indigo dye. In excellent condition. 45cm x 57cm

Two pieces of yogi (bedding) which are hand-sewn by a girl student at the sewing school which were established around 1880. It is called "hinagata" and generally one third of measurement of a real one. The left one is sodenashi yogi (sleeveless top cover) and the right one is yogi (top cover with sleeves). The purpose of making sewing samples is efficiency for time and material. It has been made till 1940s in the sewing school of which students are mostly girls...

A pair of cotton tabi with sashiko and a pair of kokake. Tabi is made of hand-spun white cotton and has nice sashiko for strength. Soles are machine-woven. Kokake is also made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with vegetable indigo and has fine sashiko for also strength. Kokake has no soles and it is worn over zori (Japanese sandals) for warmth and waterproof in winter. Both are in excellent condition. The first half of the 20th century. A Japanese blue & white porcelain dish, moulded in ‘kraak’ style with the cavetto featuring butterflies and peaches in relief. The rinka, or petaled edge, with flowers. The centre of of the dish has a depiction of a gated pavilion set in a fabulous garden. Arita 1750 ~ 1770. A bowl with a very similar border design and alternate moulded butterflies and peaches is shown in the Catalogue of the Shibata Collection, item 3321.
