Rare antique Chinese multi-color scholar's brush holder in the form of the Chinese men's boot, Ming Dynasty 1368 -1644 AD.

Made of ceramic with sancai glazing, elaborately molded-in raised pattern, the boot's toe is adorned with a monster mask and richly glazed in cobalt blue, turquoise, brown, and cream beige.

CONDITION: Shows the age and use, with minor age wear.

In good condition, considering its age of more than 376 years, no damage or repairs...

Fine and rare Longquan classic celadon bottle with an unusual shape- like a truncated meiping. The depth of the glaze achieves the ideal “jade like” quality that is much sought after by celadon collectors. The Ming attribution is conservative based on the inward beveling on the footrim and reddish slip visible on the glazed edge, but Yuan or Song cannot be completely ruled out...

DESCRIPTION: A fine red and gilt Chinese scholar's ink cake in circular form with the front and back molded in relief in the form of a foo dog (shi shi) with tightly curled mane. Both the front and back have raised Chinese characters in relief. Excellent condition in original box, and dating from the first quarter of the 20th C. or earlier. DIMENSIONS: 2 ¾” diameter (7 cm).

One of the "four treasures of the scholar’s studio," this striking scholar’s brush would have been used for calligraphy or painting. This attractive, well made brush dates from the early 20th C. A scholar's Yixing brush washer with a white crackle glaze interior. On the exterior raised in high relief and enameled decorated are two quilong chasing the flaming pearl. In excellent condition, it measures 4" diameter by 1.25 inches high. Dates circa 1880.

A blue glazed porcelain scholar's brush rest in the shape of a five peaked mountain. In good antique condition showing wear to the highest peak. Height 2 3/8", length 3 5/8 inches. Circa 1900 or earlier.

Vintage Chinese ink and color on paper painting by Zhang Kuan (1921-2009) of two ducks swimming among cherry blossoms. Signed in black ink at the upper left and with three red artist's seals. Zhang Kuan was an active painter for over 50 years. By the 1960s, he began to specialize in bird and flower paintings. Including the silk mounting, the painting measures 32 1/2” x 21 3/4” (painting: 26 1/2” x 17 7/8”). Very good overall condition. From a Phoenix, Arizona collection.

A small metal box which contains an ink stone to grind ink sticks for writing. The box has been cast in brass and has a copper bottom. The ink stone is secured in the lid with a spring frame. The top of the box shows an engraved landscape design with a scholar figure and a hut. By all appearances the box has not been used as it does not show ink stains, and it still has a new looking, temporary, six sided factory mark inside. Also there are Chinese characters engraved on the lid...

Chinese Qing dynasty low circular form porcelain brush washer covered overall in a monochrome oxblood red glaze holding a partly submerged moulded recumbent water buffalo at the center. A brown wash was applied to the low flat foot and slightly recessed base. 7 3/4" diameter x 2” high. 18th/19th century. A few thin glaze losses in the bottom reveal the white porcelain body. A small production flaw to one horn looks like a chip but appears to be glazed over...

Chinese late Qing to Republic period guanpixiang table-top chest with a mansard-style hinged top that lifts to expose a single shallow tray above a pair of doors opening to five drawers with metal pulls all upon an attached base. A circular lockplate with ruyi-form clasp is on the front. Two side carrying handles. These chests were typically utilized by men to hold seals and related accessories while women were known to use them for cosmetics storage. Early 20th century...

The stone has a lustrous patina and has a very dramatic ‘splash’ of red on both sides. It has never been carved with a designation and the base has now a shallow flake as a result of an impact on the edge, with a little powdery material showing. Further along there is a tiny bruise to the edge. These could be taken out by reducing the length by 0.4cm. Personally the chip does not worry me...
