A “Gosho Ningyo” doll of a plump kneeling male child carrying a “hyotan” gourd. The large gourd symbolizes health, vitality, prosperity and immortality. The kneeling boy is wearing a bib with painted accents in white, green, navy blue, brown and gold pigments. There are two ties in the back for the bib. The hyotan (gourd) is also painted in greens, navy-blues, gold and grey of 3-leafed motifs that appear to be paulownia flowers...

A small house shaped incense burner by Mashimizu Zoroku enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuzuya Koro. Inside the roof is visible cloth patterns where it was formed over wet sack-cloth. The outside has been scraped with a comb to resemble thatch. Inside a window a scholar gazes out, perhaps expecting a guest, or just contemplating the seasonal changes from the warmth of his abode. It is roughly 10.5 x 9 x 10.5 cm (4 x 3-1/2 x 4 inches) and is in excellent condition...

Mountains crowned with white snow rise majestically over the misty waters of a winter lake surrounded in dark pine and cedar on this Superb landscape by Nomura Bunkyo. Ink and light color on silk with powdered gold mist. The mounting is all original and top quality, brilliant blue silk border on front in black lacquer frame with fine bronze hardware and entirely backed in patterned blue satin...

Cedar wooden ‘post-hide’ or hashira-kakushi that is used as a decoration of one of the posts in a room, or a horizontal post of the tokonoma (niche). The post-hide is the same width as the pillar posts in a Japanese house, hiding it thus almost completely in width.
Cedar wood, the front stained dark brown and decorated in mineral with a dragon. Seal on either end of the plaque. Inscription in black ink on the back...

Japanese antique 2-section choba tansu from the Gifu area. This merchant's chest is made of hinoki (Japanese cypress) wood and has extensive horizontal wooden slats on the sides for support. The top portion of the chest has sliding panels with horizontal slats which match the sides and one full-width drawer. The larger bottom section also has sliders with horizontal slats and 5 drawers of various sizes...

Japanese Oribe Ceramic Basket with handle, 6" x 7" wide-shaped fluted floral pedal top, 5" high, 3 1/2" diameter-bottom rim, greenish turquoise color drip glaze blended into creamy color glaze, and carved leafy design outside top area. The condition is good, no damages.

This is a wonderful Meiji Era or Japanese golden age cloisonne box. The designs and form on this piece are very attractive and quite rare. Even the bottom has the fan shaped decorative designs. This box is in excellent condition but not perfect because the bottom enamel edges show some table wear. The box measures 4 3/4 inches by 4 inches and is2 1/4 inches tall. It is not signed.

Antique Japanese choba tansu, merchant's storage chest. This front of this tansu is made all of keyaki (elm) wood with original translucent lacquer finish and dramatic grain. The top portion has 2 sliding panels. The middle portion of the chest has a pair of large sliding panels which open to a compartment with one shelf...

Antique Japanese two section futon tansu. The upper section has double sliding burl wood panel doors which house a roomy storage interior. The bottom section is comprised of six burl front drawers with decorative cloud design locks.

A Japanese woodblock print from Ukiyo fuzoku Yamato nishiki-e (Japanese colour prints in Ukiyo style). The portrait is by Kabukido Enkyo, active 1796, of the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozo III as Umeomaru.

This print is from the celebrated set of reproductions of the best of ukiyo-e art published in 12 large vols. 240 woodblock-printed reproductions of famous ukiyo-e prints. 1914. The project was overseen by Hashiguchi Goyo, 1880-1921, who also provided text and cover designs...

Judging by the tomobako, the shifuku, and the patina of the bowl, this piece was likely fired in early Showa (1926 - 1936) when Sosen was thought to be most active.

Perfectly formed and resting firmly on a well-grounded kodai (foot/ pedestal), this chawan is vivid, light in the hand, and has a calming presence. The artist, Asao Sosen (1897 - 1978), was known for making chagama furo (Japanese ornamental brazier used in tea ceremony) as well as “Unge” stoneware of various forms...
