Antique Japanese 2-section todana tansu, comprised all of Keyaki (elm) wood, with stunning, bold natural burl front panels with original, warm finish. Simplistic design with minimalistic hardware. Its two lowest sets of sliding door panels hold spacious shelved storage room within, while the top holds an open space. A small lift-away panel with an eggplant shaped handle adds a subtle touch of charm.

Stunning cherry blossom crest lock plates and mock (melon style) handles. The top right section has a smaller drawer and locking door with two small drawers hidden away inside. A hand forged Uchidashi Iron votive tablet in the form of a Shojo sake sprite knocking back a massive cup. It is 84 x 58 cm (33 x 23 inches) and in fine condition, enclosed in the original black wooden frame. Uchidashi is a technique of hand hammering shapes and images into iron from behind, and is highly valued in Japan, a land where metal was extremely scarce and hand formed from iron ore up to the Meiji period. This dates from the 19th century.

Antique uchishiki, Japanese alter cloth, embroidered on silk satin with Chinese theme, “The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove”. Probably from late 18th to mid 19th century. 26 3/8" x 25" (67cm x 63 1/2cm).

Condition: This is a beautiful antique textile even with some obvious damage and wear, still solid with a thick cotton backing. The wear is seen particularly on both ends of the design. This quality of needle work is seldom seen.

Antique Japanese unusual choba tansu (merchant's chest) with original red lacquer finish hardwood. A single long drawers runs along the top, with four small drawers along the righthand side, and two large, hinged doors on the left, with an interior storage area. Simplistic decorative iron plating of round locks, squared (kakute) handles, and scalloped corner hardware decorative the front and frame of the piece.

Attractive, natural woodgrain with original dark finish. This piece comes from the Kyusu area of Japan and is rarely seen.
